Governed by an absolute monarchy, Bruneians today nonetheless enjoy a high level of social protection and rule of law. But questions loom in the middle- and far-term. When the natural gas runs out, can Brunei replace hydrocarbon rents with earnings from its sovereign wealth fund? Can Brunei afford the high level of social support that makes it a “welfare monarchy”?
